Dark mode is not just a vibe: the case for energy-aware interfaces

A dark interface is often dismissed as an aesthetic preference. On the growing population of OLED and AMOLED displays it is also, modestly, an energy decision — because a black pixel on those panels is a pixel drawing almost no power.
The savings are real, if small
The per-device saving from dark UI is measured in single-digit percentages, and only on emissive displays. But interfaces are viewed billions of times. Small numbers multiplied by enormous reach are exactly the kind of detail Green Coding is about.
Efficiency beyond colour
- Ship less JavaScript — parsing costs energy on every load
- Lazy-load below-the-fold media
- Cache aggressively to avoid re-fetching
- Respect reduced-motion to skip needless animation
We built this site dark on purpose. It is a small proof that we practise what we recommend.
None of these choices is heroic. Together they make an interface that respects both the user's attention and their battery.
